& Orcelia Galbraith (4 Feb 1795 - Sept 1881) were married on 1 April 1819 in Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scotland, daughter of David Galbreath
and Mary Fleming, she died at age 82
(Reg. # 7752) in Hotham West, Victoria.
John is listed on the death certificate of his son William Wylie, and
John’s profession is given as farmer.
John was 73 when he died in Melbourne
(Reg. # 8715) But on his own death certificate it
states that he was a Labourer – maybe he was a farming labourer, his wife is
written as Cecilia Galbraith – they had been in Victoria
for 5/2 years and John died at Arden
Street, Hotham. His son David was Informant and he was also
living in Arden Street.
John was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery on
5 September,
1867, his wife Orscelia on 4 September 1881 –
they are in the Baptist Section, Compartment C, Grave
45. In the grave are three
grandchildren, Margaret, [dau of James & Jessie],
Jane and James [son & dau of Andrew & Jane],

was also christened there on 2

buried at Melbourne General Cemetery Baptist Section, Compartment C, Grave 679
with his sister Mary, Cecilia Stephens Wylie died 1931 and William Stephens
Wylie age 26 died 1898 – perhaps David’s daughter and husband?
1.4.1.2. Andrew Wylie (12 Apr 1822 - bef
1832) born at Campbeltown (IGI) Argyllshire he was
also christened there on 16
March, 1822 (parents John Wylie and Orsla Galbreath).

April 1825 (parents John Wylie and Orsla Galbreath). It appears that James married Jessie Menzies (1823 - 1905) but no
marriage record can be found. There is a
marriage record in 1884 to Catherine
Collins who was born in Ballarat, but no birth records to a James and
Catherine. James died at Essendon (Reg.

1907) were married in Dundee, Angus, Scotland on 20 November, 1857. (IGI
#M112821 Scotland) son of John Wylie and Orcelia
Galbraith.
It appears that Elizabeth came out to Auckland on the ‘Queen Of The North’ ,
arriving on July, 31 1862. Her
occupation is given as servant and she came with three children, James, Andrew
and William. It appears therefore that
William came out before Elizabeth to have a home ready for her and the
children. The death certificates states
that William was a Lithographer and he died of progressive pernicious anaemia
which he had for six years having been in New Zealand for 31 years, which means
that he came out in 1861. He died at
home at Woolcombe Street, Wellington. If the arrival date on the death certificate
is correct then based on the Auckland
Area Passenger List 1838-1883, then it appears that William came out on the
‘Gananoque’ which arrived on 18 October, 1861,
there is one W. Wylie around this time period.

Frederick (or Alfred?) Charles Miller (abt 1887 –
1957) on 30 May, 1932 in
Wellington as
his second wife. Prior to her marriage Lydia
was living at 41 Severn
Street (Ref. 1928 Electoral Roll) which

May 1932: Frederick Charles Miller age 45, chef
(widower – 13 June 1931)
residence-Wellington. Lydia Elmsly Wylie age 40, spinster, residence-Wellington. Married in the Presbyterian
Church, Island Bay by G. IRELAND, Presbyterian.
Family oral history was that Frederick’s
first wife and children were killed in the Napier earthquake – which was on 3 February, 1931,
but she actually died four and a half months after the earthquake. Sybil Gwendoline Cooper (1899 – 3 Feb 1931)
was born in December quarter in Gisborne, N.Z. (Reg. # 3564) and died in June
quarter in Napier (Reg. # 1424). The
family said that Frederick
was a “Hawker” -
perhaps after his marriage he changed jobs from chef. Lydia
and Frederick
divorced – there is some feeling in the family that he may have walked out on Lydia.

Colin
Turner Wylie (3
October 1892 – 25
Jul 1948) born in Tokatoka,
N.Z. he worked for the Union Steamship Company.
Colin married Enid Beatrice
Atkinson (12 Aug 1902 –
1972) in 1925 in Victoria, daughter of Lennox Lett
Atkinson and Isabel (Blanche) Crofton (nee Staveley). Colin fought in the trenches in France
and Belgium
during WWI. Kath Allardyce
said that Colin suffered a nervous breakdown after WWI. In 1928 working as a clerk, Colin and Enid were
living at 34 Mersey Street, Island Bay in
South Wellington.
During
WWII Colin was an air raid warden and he wore a uniform, which June Winchester
says looked like a fireman’s uniform. He
was given a push bike – (he had never ridden a bike before); and would go off
one night a week on patrol. Colin would
also go to the docks at night to receive the coded messages of the vessels and
their cargo which were coming in, which he then de-coded at home from a very large
book that simply, just sat next to the telephone. Colin always said he was far more
apprehensive of the ‘wharfies’ than the
Japanese. Colin dug a trench in the
paddock next door to the family house in Violet Grove so that if there was any
bombing the family could take cover in the trench. Both Colin and his younger brother Les
contributed financially to the household at Severn Street. Colin died at his home in Violet Grove, East
Kew, Victoria.

‘NZ
Free Lance’ newspaper [publication date 14 June 1902]
Mr. A.F. Wiren of Wellington, was born with a
quenchless enthusiasm for cricket and football.
But destiny marked him out for the law, and last week he was duly
admitted to the Bar. “Andy” is the son
of a Swedish father and an English mother, and it is probable that both were of
a modest and retiring disposition, for their son certainly is. Mr. Wiren, senior, was attracted to Victoria in the
days when horses were shod with gold, and nugget were more frequent than
potatoes, but not so valuable. He
fossicked on
Daylesford diggings, and started a store on the proceeds. He racked in gold duct on the Ovens and at
Kyneton, when flour was 40 pounds a ton, and sold kerosene in Castlemaine
before the beer industry broke out. ***
The nugget “Andy” came to light at Bairnsdale diggings, Gippsland, and when he
was four years old his father brought him to Wellington. He would “play the wag” often for a game of
cricket, and if he was “bowled out” by the wielder of the willow-switch, he
could always make a good defence, although he had no thought of joining the
Devil’s Own then a-days. He assimilated
knowledge at Wellington Wesleyan day school, and enlarged it at the Boys’ High
School. Then, they made a draper of
little Andy, and sent him to measure tape behind the counter of Turnbull, Smith
and Co., who were afterwards bought out by Sargoods.
*** He
was a cricket critic all this time, and he has written many useful things about
the game. His mother believed he had
brains, and urged him to study law, and when he went into the wastepaper
department of Mr Ollivier’s office, at the age of
fifteen, he read bits of legal dry-rot in between the matches. He was one of the Wellington
twenty-two that played a drawn match with the English team in 1888, and he
played for the Poneke Club whenever he got off the
chain. He is the keenest sport the Ponekes ever had, and we have it on the authority of the
Rugby Union, the ‘whitest.” He has
followed the law with Mr. Olliver, his partner, Mr
Brown and their successors, Messrs. Skerrett and
Wylie, for twenty-two years, and he showed his appreciation of the treatment of
the firm by marrying Miss Wylie, the sister of the boss. *** He has a young cricketer coming on, in
the person of a three-year-old son, and the little chap’s sister, who is older,
aids and abets him in his aspirations.
Of course, Andy used to belong to the Rugby Union before he started to
“swat” in earnest, and to the Wellington Cricket association. “Swatting”, however, did not prevent him
going to see the test match in Sydney last February. Finally, if
the new solicitor and old sport, has an enemy, let him
lodge his complaint. He would probably
require a wearer of silk to win a case disproving Andy’s claim to the title of
the “White Sport”.
